After the Sun: Why Autumn Is the Season to Get Serious About Your Skin

Healthy glowing skin after a personalised autumn skin plan at No.1 Urban Aesthetics

There is a point every September when the light changes, the evenings pull in and your skin quietly hands you the bill for summer.

The tan that looked healthy in July begins to fade. Pigmentation can suddenly seem more obvious. Skin that felt perfectly fine on holiday may start to look dull, tight or uneven. Add heat, travel, air conditioning, late nights, sweat, SPF and perhaps a slightly more relaxed skincare routine, and autumn can arrive with skin that simply feels less polished than it did a few weeks earlier.

That does not mean your skin needs to be attacked with the strongest acid on the shelf. It means September is a very useful moment to reassess it — while there is still time to make sensible, progressive changes before colder weather, central heating and the festive season arrive.

When the tan fades, the skin underneath becomes easier to read

Summer can disguise quite a lot. A warmer complexion can make skin appear more even, while increased oil production may temporarily soften the appearance of fine lines. Once that colour starts to fade, uneven pigmentation, dehydration, congestion and rougher texture can become easier to see.

This is why “my skin suddenly looks awful” is such a familiar September complaint. Usually it has not happened overnight. Some of what you are seeing has simply become more visible.

Post-summer skin should not automatically be scrubbed, peeled or overloaded with actives. Skin that feels dry may actually be dehydrated. Skin that looks dull may benefit from exfoliation, but it may equally be dealing with barrier disruption. Pigmentation needs a different strategy again. The useful starting point is working out which of those things is actually happening.

As a Dermalogica partner clinic, we can use professional skin assessment and Dermalogica PRO treatments to build that reset around the individual rather than the season. A Pro Skin treatment can be tailored around concerns such as dehydration, congestion, sensitivity, uneven tone and loss of radiance, while also helping us decide whether your home routine needs to change as the weather does.

For some clients, that professional reset and a better home routine may be enough. For others, it becomes the starting point for a more structured autumn treatment plan.

Autumn is when treatment planning gets interesting

There is a reason some of our favourite skin work gathers momentum at this time of year. As the high-summer months recede, autumn can be an excellent period to plan treatments aimed at texture, skin quality and selected pigmentation concerns, provided the skin is suitable and appropriate sun protection and aftercare are followed.

Microneedling is one of the treatments we commonly discuss. It creates controlled micro-injury within the skin, stimulating natural repair processes associated with collagen production and remodelling. That makes it relevant for selected concerns including uneven texture, post-acne changes, enlarged-looking pores, dullness and general loss of skin quality.

It is not, however, something everybody needs simply because the calendar says September. If the barrier is irritated, there is active inflammatory skin disease, or another approach makes more sense, we would rather say so. Treatment plans work better when they are built around the skin in front of us rather than whatever is currently performing well on social media.

For clients where hydration and overall skin quality are the bigger priorities, skin boosters or polynucleotides may enter the conversation instead. These are different treatments with different indications, but both can form part of a strategy focused on improving skin quality rather than dramatically changing facial structure.

The important bit is not the fashionable name on the syringe. It is choosing the right intervention, at the right time, for the right person.

And this is where a little seasonal urgency is genuinely useful. Treatments based on progressive skin improvement need time. Collagen does not consult your Christmas diary before deciding when to remodel.

Starting in September or early autumn gives us room to assess, treat where appropriate and review your response before the busiest social part of the year. By late November, a surprising number of people would quite like everything fixed by next Friday. Biology remains stubbornly unimpressed by deadlines.

Keep the glow. Lose the UV.

Autumn skin prep does not mean surrendering the colour you enjoyed over summer. We also offer Bondi Sands professional spray tanning at No.1 Urban, giving clients the option of maintaining a warmer, bronzed look without deliberately extending ultraviolet exposure simply because the holiday tan has started disappearing.

A tan and healthy skin are not the same thing. There is nothing wrong with liking some colour, but deliberately exposing skin to UV for cosmetic tanning works against many of the things people simultaneously ask us to improve: uneven pigmentation, premature skin ageing and collagen loss.

A professional spray tan offers a much neater compromise: keep the glow while your skincare and professional treatments concentrate on the skin underneath. If you have autumn events, weddings, nights out or the early Christmas calendar beginning to fill, we can also help you plan tanning around your other skin treatments rather than squeezing everything into the same 48 hours.

Your autumn routine probably needs changing too

The treatment room is only part of the story. One of the biggest mistakes at the change of season is continuing exactly the same home routine while the environment around the skin changes completely.

Autumn brings colder air, lower humidity, wind and eventually central heating — the uniquely British experience of walking from horizontal rain into a building heated to the temperature of a crematorium. Your skin notices.

That may mean adjusting cleansing, exfoliation, moisturisation or active ingredients. Some people need more barrier support. Others need help managing congestion that developed over summer. Some benefit from targeted brightening products for uneven tone. As a Dermalogica partner clinic, we can build those recommendations around assessment rather than handing everyone the same three products because they happen to be trending.

And despite the sun disappearing behind a cloud somewhere around August Bank Holiday, SPF does not suddenly become optional. Ultraviolet exposure continues throughout the year. If you are actively managing pigmentation or protecting the results of professional treatments, daily protection remains one of the least glamorous and most useful things you can do.

The best autumn skin plan starts before winter does

September gives you something valuable: time. Time to see how your skin has come through summer. Time to settle irritation or dehydration before doing anything more intensive. Time to begin a course where one is appropriate. Time to adjust homecare gradually rather than panic-buying six new products when your face starts feeling tight in November.

That does not mean everybody needs microneedling, a skin booster, polynucleotides and a facial before Halloween. Quite the opposite. The aim is to identify the smallest sensible combination that moves your skin in the right direction.

For one person that might be a Dermalogica Pro Skin treatment and a better home routine. For another, autumn may be the right opportunity to begin microneedling.

Someone else may benefit more from a skin booster or polynucleotide treatment, while another client simply wants healthier-looking skin beneath a Bondi Sands glow.

There is no single autumn face. There should not be a single autumn treatment plan either.

What does matter is timing. If improving your skin before winter or the festive season is already somewhere on your mental to-do list, starting the conversation now gives us considerably more options than trying to manufacture a transformation two weeks before Christmas.

Autumn skin FAQs

Should I change my skincare routine in autumn?

Often, yes — but not simply by switching to the heaviest moisturiser you can find. Cooler air and central heating can change hydration and barrier needs, while summer congestion or pigmentation may need targeted management. We prefer to assess what has actually changed before recommending products.

Is autumn a good time for microneedling?

It can be. Autumn is often a practical time to plan microneedling because intense summer sun exposure is reducing, but suitability still depends on your skin, medical history, current products and ability to follow aftercare and sun-protection advice.

Can microneedling treat pigmentation from summer?

Microneedling may form part of a plan for selected pigmentation and uneven tone, but pigmentation is not one single condition. Assessment matters because the wrong treatment or poorly controlled inflammation can make some pigmentation problems worse.

What is best for dehydrated post-summer skin?

That depends on whether the issue is dehydration, barrier disruption, true dryness or a combination. A tailored Dermalogica PRO treatment and homecare adjustment may be appropriate; in selected clients we may also discuss injectable skin-quality treatments such as skin boosters.

Are polynucleotides the same as skin boosters?

No. The terms are sometimes bundled together online, but they are not interchangeable. They have different compositions and treatment rationales. We will recommend them only where they fit the concern and the individual.

Do I still need SPF in autumn and winter?

Yes. UV exposure does not disappear when the temperature drops, and consistent protection is particularly important when managing pigmentation or undertaking treatments designed to improve skin quality.

Can I have a spray tan while having skin treatments?

Usually it can be incorporated into a treatment plan, but timing matters. We will advise how to space a Bondi Sands spray tan around facials, microneedling or injectable treatments so you are not exfoliating away your tan or compromising treatment aftercare.

How soon should I start if I want my skin looking its best for Christmas?

Earlier is better if your plan involves progressive treatments. September and October give us useful breathing room for assessment, treatment and review. If you leave it until December, the safe and realistic options become much narrower.
