The Dermalogica Recommended Skincare Routine: A Professional Guide to Building Your Morning & Evening Skin Health Plan

Healthy skin is not built by accident. It is built by consistency, correct layering, intelligent ingredient use, and an unwavering respect for the skin barrier. This is not a trend piece. This is not a social media fad wrapped in pretty packaging. This is the definitive professional guide — brought to you by the team at No1 Urban Aesthetics @GlitterbelsHQ, Newcastle-under-Lyme's destination for evidence-based skin health.

As proud Dermalogica partners, we follow a skin health–first philosophy. That means every routine we recommend is structured around physiology, barrier science, and long-term resilience — not influencer endorsements or fleeting hype cycles. We believe that when you understand the why behind each step, you become an active participant in your own skin transformation.

Whether you are a seasoned skincare devotee or someone just beginning to take your skin seriously, this guide will walk you through the correct Dermalogica-aligned order of application, explain why each step matters at a cellular level, and show you how to adapt your routine for morning protection and evening repair. If you have ever wondered whether you are layering correctly, over-exfoliating, wasting active ingredients, or skipping a crucial step — consider this your definitive reference.

Welcome to skincare, done properly.

Why Routine Order Matters More Than You Think

The Science

Skin is a living organ. It is not a passive canvas waiting for product; it is an active, dynamic ecosystem with structure, function, and rhythm. Understanding this is the first step towards building a routine that genuinely works rather than one that merely feels like it should.

The outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, acts as the body's primary barrier. It regulates trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), protects against environmental aggressors — from pollution particulates to ultraviolet radiation — and maintains the delicate balance of the skin's microbiome. When we disrupt that barrier through incorrect layering, overuse of active ingredients, or skipping protection entirely, performance declines. Visibly, measurably, and sometimes painfully.

At No1 Urban Aesthetics, we see the consequences of disordered routines every single day in our treatment rooms. Clients who arrive with irritation, dehydration, or sensitisation that they cannot explain — only for a brief consultation to reveal that their layering sequence is fundamentally wrong.

What Incorrect Order Actually Does

Applying products in the wrong sequence is not simply inefficient — it can actively work against you.

There are three core consequences that we consistently observe in clinic:

  • Reduces absorption of active ingredients — A rich occlusive cream applied before a water-based serum creates a physical barrier that prevents the serum from reaching the epidermis. Your expensive vitamin C sits on the surface doing very little.

  • Increases irritation risk — When potent actives are applied to unprepared or compromised skin, the likelihood of inflammation, redness, and reactive sensitivity escalates dramatically.

  • Compromises barrier integrity — Stripping cleansers followed by aggressive exfoliation without adequate hydration recovery leaves the barrier weakened and vulnerable to environmental assault.

The Golden Rule

Layering must move from lightest to richest texture. Always.

Cleansing prepares. Toning rebalances. Serums deliver actives. Moisturisers seal. SPF shields.

When this hierarchy is respected, skin functions optimally. When it is ignored, even premium products underperform.

Think of it as architecture: you would not put the roof on before the foundations are laid.

The Dermalogica Layering Hierarchy

Before we dive into the specifics of morning and evening routines, it is essential to understand the overarching framework that governs every professional skincare recommendation we make at No1 Urban Aesthetics.

This hierarchy is not arbitrary — it is grounded in dermatological science and the physical properties of each product formulation.

Skincare routine steps on a purple gradient: Cleanse, Exfoliate, Tone, Treat, Moisturise & Protect with icons and brief descriptions.

Each step serves a distinct physiological purpose. Skipping one is like removing a link from a chain — the entire structure weakens. The products themselves are formulated with specific molecular weights and delivery systems that are designed to work within this sequence. A lightweight serum with small molecules is engineered to penetrate; a rich moisturiser with larger molecules is engineered to sit on the surface and lock everything in. Reversing this order does not simply reduce efficacy — it can render entire steps redundant.

At No1 Urban Aesthetics @GlitterbelsHQ in Newcastle-under-Lyme, every consultation begins with an assessment of your current routine order. You would be surprised how often the solution to a client's frustration is not a new product — it is simply putting existing products in the right sequence.

The Morning Routine: Protect & Defend

Morning skincare is about preparation and protection. It is your skin's armour for the day ahead.

During daylight hours, your skin faces a relentless barrage of environmental aggressors: UV radiation (both UVA and UVB), airborne pollution particulates, high-energy visible light from screens and devices, temperature fluctuations, and oxidative stress from free radicals generated by all of the above. Even in the heart of Staffordshire, where grey skies might suggest otherwise, cumulative UV exposure is a daily reality that accelerates collagen degradation and contributes to premature ageing.

The aim of the AM routine is threefold: defend collagen, maintain hydration, and reinforce the barrier. Every product selected, and the order in which it is applied, serves one or more of these objectives. Think of your morning routine not as a beauty ritual, but as a strategic defence plan — because that is exactly what it is.

What follows is the step-by-step morning protocol we recommend to every client who walks through the doors of No1 Urban Aesthetics. It is the same framework we use with our professional ProSkin treatments, adapted for home care. It is thorough. It is evidence-based. And it works.

Step 1 — Morning Cleanse

Even if you cleansed thoroughly the night before — and you absolutely should have — your skin does not rest idle overnight. Sebaceous glands continue to produce sebum. You perspire. Pillow residue, dust mites, and metabolic waste accumulate on the skin's surface. By morning, there is a fine film of debris that must be removed before any subsequent product can perform effectively.

Dermalogica recommends beginning every morning with a cleanse to create a fresh, receptive canvas. This is not about stripping the skin bare; it is about gently clearing overnight accumulation so that your treatment products can penetrate properly and your SPF can adhere evenly.

Special Cleansing Gel

The iconic foaming cleanser that suits most skin types. A soap-free formula enriched with calming lavender and balm mint that removes impurities without disrupting the barrier. This is the all-rounder — the one we reach for most often in clinic.

White Dermalogica container with black pump, label reads "Special Cleansing Gel." Simple, minimalist design against a white background.

Intensive Moisture Cleanser

Ideal for dry, dehydrated, or mature skin. A creamy, non-foaming formula that cleanses whilst depositing moisture. Perfect for those who find traditional cleansers leave their skin feeling tight — which, incidentally, is never a sign of effectiveness.

White Dermalogica Precleanse bottle with gray cap on white background. Visible text includes product name and details. Simple, clean design.

PreCleanse

An oil-based pre-cleanser that is primarily associated with the evening double-cleanse, but can be used in the morning for congested or oily skin types that accumulate significant overnight sebum. Massage onto dry skin, then emulsify with water.

Professional tip from our treatment room: A morning cleanse should be thorough but never stripping. If your skin feels tight after cleansing, that sensation is not a sign of cleanliness — it is a sign the barrier may already be compromised. Adjust your cleanser accordingly, and speak to our team if you are unsure.

Step 2 — Exfoliate (As Appropriate)

Exfoliation is where the magic happens — but only when it is done with intelligence and restraint. Proper exfoliation improves radiance, supports the natural cell turnover cycle, smooths texture irregularities, and critically enhances the absorption of every product that follows. It is, in many ways, the step that makes all other steps work harder.

However — and this is where we see so many clients go wrong — exfoliation is not a daily imperative for every skin type. At No1 Urban Aesthetics, we are passionate advocates for personalised exfoliation frequency. Some skin types tolerate daily micro-exfoliation beautifully and thrive on it. Others require just two to three sessions per week.

Over-exfoliation is one of the most common mistakes we encounter in clinic, and its consequences — sensitisation, redness, compromised barrier function, reactive breakouts — can take weeks to resolve.

White cylindrical bottle with a dark gray cap labeled "dermalogica" and "daily microfoliant" against a plain background. Simple and modern design.

Daily Microfoliant

The cult classic. A rice-based enzyme powder that activates upon contact with water, delivering gentle micro-exfoliation that brightens without aggression. Suitable for daily use on most skin types.

Daily Milkfoliant

The gentler sibling, formulated for sensitive, dry, or reactive skin. Plant-based AHAs combined with oat and coconut milk soothe whilst refining. Ideal for clients who want exfoliation benefits without any risk of irritation.

Pink bottle of Dermalogica liquid exfoliant with a dropper cap, showing text and details. Simple, clean background emphasizes the product.

Liquid Peelfoliant

A more intensive option combining AHAs, BHAs, and enzymatic exfoliants. Used less frequently — typically two to three times per week — for skin that can handle a deeper level of renewal. Brilliant for addressing texture and congestion.

The golden rule: exfoliation should leave skin smooth, luminous, and comfortable — never sensitised, red, or stinging. If you are experiencing any of the latter, your exfoliation frequency or product strength needs reassessing. Our team at No 1 urban aesthetics is always available to help you calibrate.

Step 3 — Tone

Toning is perhaps the most misunderstood step in the entire skincare routine — and it is one that we spend considerable time educating clients about during consultations at No1 Urban Aesthetics. If your perception of toner is rooted in the harsh, alcohol-laden astringents of decades past, it is time for a significant recalibration.

In modern professional skincare, toners are hydrating, rebalancing, and preparatory. They are not designed to strip residual oil or make the skin feel "squeaky clean." Their role is far more sophisticated: they restore the skin's optimal pH after cleansing, deliver a first layer of lightweight hydration, and prime the epidermis to receive and absorb treatment serums more effectively.

Think of toning as setting the stage — ensuring every subsequent product performer can deliver their best.

Recommended Toners

  • Multi-Active Toner — A refreshing, lightweight spritz that hydrates and smooths. Aloe vera and arnica calm the skin whilst prepping for treatment. The versatile everyday option.

  • Antioxidant Hydramist — A powerhouse mist loaded with antioxidant protection from green tea, white tea, and vitamin E. Ideal for environmentally exposed skin and city dwellers.

  • UltraCalming Mist — Specifically formulated for reactive and sensitised skin. Contains oat kernel extract and lavender to soothe inflammation and reduce redness. The go-to for clients with rosacea tendencies.

Why This Step Is Non-Negotiable

Cleansing, even with the gentlest formulations, can temporarily shift the skin's pH. Toning brings it back to the slightly acidic environment (around pH 5.5) that the barrier requires to function optimally. Without this reset, serums may not absorb efficiently, and the microbiome can become destabilised.

Additionally, toners deliver hydration into the upper layers of the epidermis, creating a moisture-rich environment that helps active ingredients in subsequent steps penetrate more effectively. It is a small step with disproportionately large impact.

Step 4 — Targeted Treatment Serum

This is where true customisation begins — and where the expertise of a professional consultation becomes invaluable.

Serums are the workhorses of any skincare routine. They are formulated with higher concentrations of active ingredients and smaller molecular structures, enabling them to penetrate deeper into the epidermis than cleansers or moisturisers ever could. If you are investing in one premium product in your routine, this is where that investment delivers the greatest return.

Morning treatment serums typically focus on two primary objectives: antioxidant protection and hydration reinforcement. Antioxidants neutralise free radicals generated by UV exposure and pollution before they can damage collagen and elastin fibres.

Hydrating actives increase water retention within the epidermis, plumping the skin and improving its ability to resist environmental stress.

White bottle of Biolumin-C Serum with gold cap, text reads "dermalogica." Set against a plain white background.

BioLumin-C Serum

Dermalogica's flagship vitamin C serum. Stabilised ascorbic acid combined with a unique bio-technology complex delivers unparalleled brightness, supports collagen synthesis, and provides potent environmental defence. Skin appears visibly more luminous from the very first application. This is the single most transformative morning product we recommend.

White serum bottle with a silver cap and dropper, labeled "dermalogica circular hydration serum." Text details hydration benefits.

Circular Hydration Serum

A multi-weight hyaluronic acid complex that draws moisture from the atmosphere and locks it into the skin at multiple levels. Ideal for dehydrated skin of any type, including oily skins that are water-deficient. Lightweight, fast-absorbing, and impactful.

Purple bottle of Dermalogica serum with white text on a white background, creating a clean and minimalist appearance.

Phyto Nature Firming Serum

A luxurious peptide-rich serum that supports the skin's natural firming mechanisms. Plant stem cells and niacinamide work synergistically to improve elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines. The choice for clients concerned with loss of firmness.

Serums should be applied sparingly — a few drops are sufficient — and allowed a moment to absorb before layering moisturiser on top. Piling on excess product does not increase efficacy; it simply wastes product and can impede the performance of subsequent layers.

Step 5 — Eye Treatment

The periorbital area — the skin surrounding the eyes — deserves its own dedicated step, and here is why: it is anatomically distinct from the rest of the face. The skin around the eyes is approximately 40% thinner than elsewhere on the face. It contains fewer sebaceous glands, meaning it produces less of its own natural oil and is therefore more susceptible to dehydration. It is also one of the most expressive areas of the face, subject to constant micro-movements from blinking, squinting, and emotional expression, which accelerates the formation of fine lines.

Standard facial serums and moisturisers are not formulated for this delicate zone. They may be too heavy, too active, or simply the wrong molecular weight for effective absorption in the periorbital area. Dedicated eye treatments are designed with precisely calibrated concentrations and textures.

Our Recommendations

White skincare tube labeled dermalogica, with an amber cap, stands against a plain white background, conveying a clean, minimalistic look.

BioLumin-C Eye Serum

The eye-specific counterpart to the hero facial serum. Vitamin C and peptides target dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines simultaneously. A multi-tasking powerhouse for the eye area.

White tube of Dermalogica Age Reversal Eye Complex against a plain background. Text and logo visible. Calm, clean aesthetic.

Age Reversal Eye Complex

A richer, more intensive treatment that combines retinol with peptide technology. Designed for mature skin or those with more advanced signs of ageing around the eyes. Best introduced gradually.

Application technique matters:  Always use the ring finger to apply eye product. The ring finger naturally exerts the least pressure, which is essential for this fragile area. Tap gently along the orbital bone — never drag, pull, or rub. Start at the inner corner beneath the eye and work outward, then continue along the brow bone back inward.

Did You Know?

We blink an average of 15,000–20,000 times per day. That is 15,000 micro-contractions of the delicate orbicularis oculi muscle, each one placing mechanical stress on the surrounding skin.

This is precisely why the eye area shows signs of ageing before anywhere else on the face and why targeted treatment is not a luxury, but a necessity.

Step 6 — Moisturise

If serums are the treatment, moisturisers are the seal. Their primary function is to reinforce the skin barrier by combining three classes of ingredients that work in concert: humectants (which attract and bind water), emollients (which smooth and soften the skin surface), and occlusives (which create a protective film to prevent moisture loss).

A well-formulated moisturiser prevents transepidermal water loss (TEWL), maintains skin comfort throughout the day, and provides a stable base for SPF application. Without this step, the active ingredients delivered by your serum are left exposed and unprotected — vulnerable to evaporation and environmental degradation before they can complete their work.

Skin Smoothing Cream

A medium-weight, hydrating moisturiser with active HydraMesh Technology. Suitable for normal to dry skin types. Smooths, softens, and protects without heaviness. The everyday all-rounder that our clients consistently repurchase.

Intensive Moisture Balance

A richer formulation for chronically dry or mature skin. Combines hyaluronic acid with lipid-replenishing ingredients to restore the barrier's structural integrity. Particularly effective during colder months when central heating and harsh weather conspire against skin hydration.

Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF50

The time-saver's dream — a moisturiser and broad-spectrum SPF50 in a single product. Polypeptides and white tea antioxidants nourish whilst physical sunscreen agents provide robust UV defence. Ideal for clients who want to streamline their morning routine without compromising on protection.

Step 7 — SPF: The Non-Negotiable Final Step

SPF is non-negotiable. Full stop. No exceptions. No excuses. Not even in Newcastle-under-Lyme in January.

Even on overcast days in Staffordshire, a significant proportion of UVA radiation penetrates cloud cover. Unlike UVB, which is primarily responsible for burning, UVA travels deeper into the dermis.

UVA exposure activates matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) — enzymes that break down collagen and elastin within the skin’s structural framework. When overactivated by repeated sun exposure, MMPs degrade these supportive fibres faster than the body can rebuild them.

The result is cumulative collagen loss, reduced elasticity, and premature skin ageing — often without visible sunburn.

This process is silent, progressive, and largely preventable with consistent daily broad-spectrum SPF.

This is the message we deliver to every single client who sits in our treatment chair, and it is the hill we will professionally die on. UVA radiation — the wavelength primarily responsible for collagen degradation, premature ageing, and hyperpigmentation — penetrates cloud cover. It penetrates glass. It is present at the same intensity whether the sky is blazingly blue or relentlessly overcast. Even in the British climate, daily UV exposure accumulates silently, and its effects compound over years and decades.

Without SPF, every preceding step in your morning routine is undermined. Your vitamin C serum is fighting a losing battle against free radical generation. Your moisturiser cannot protect against photodamage. Your exfoliation has left fresh, newly revealed skin cells exposed and vulnerable. SPF is not an optional add-on — it is the keystone that holds the entire morning routine together.

SPF Application Rules

  • SPF is always the final step in the morning routine

  • Apply generously — most people under-apply by 50%

  • Reapply every two hours if outdoors for extended periods

  • Do not rely on SPF in makeup — it is never applied thickly enough to provide adequate protection

  • Year-round usage, every single day, regardless of weather

The Evening Routine: Repair & Restore

If the morning routine is your shield, the evening routine is your repair workshop. This is where the real transformation happens.

Nightfall signals a fundamental shift in skin physiology. As circadian rhythms transition into their nocturnal phase, the skin's priorities pivot from defence to repair. Cell division accelerates. Blood flow to the skin increases. The barrier becomes more permeable, allowing active ingredients to penetrate more deeply and effectively. Growth hormones surge, facilitating tissue repair and collagen synthesis. In short, the evening is when your skin does its most important work — and the evening routine exists to support and amplify that process.

The evening protocol is corrective by nature. Its first objective is to thoroughly remove the day's accumulated burden: sunscreen, makeup, environmental pollutants, oxidised sebum, and general debris. Its second objective is to deliver potent reparative actives — retinoids, brightening agents, barrier-restoring lipids — that capitalise on the skin's heightened nocturnal receptivity. Its third objective is to lock in moisture and create the optimal environment for overnight regeneration.

At No1 Urban Aesthetics, we consider the evening routine to be the most impactful half of the skincare equation. Morning protection is essential, but evening repair is where lasting change is made. This is where we address pigmentation, fine lines, loss of firmness, congestion, and barrier damage. This is where skin health is truly built.

The Double Cleanse: The Cornerstone of Evening Care

Double cleansing is not a trend. It is not a K-beauty novelty. It is a dermatological necessity for anyone who wears sunscreen (which, as we have established, should be everyone). A single cleanse simply cannot adequately remove the complex mixture of oil-based and water-based debris that accumulates on the skin during the course of a day. The double cleanse uses the principle of "like dissolves like" — an oil-based first cleanse dissolves oil-based impurities, and a water-based second cleanse removes everything else.

White Dermalogica bottle with gray pump against plain background. Text reads "precleanse" and "dermalogica" vertically. Simple, clean design.

First Cleanse — Oil-Based

PreCleanse is the essential first step. This oil-based cleanser dissolves sunscreen, makeup, pollution residue, and oxidised sebum on contact. Massage thoroughly onto dry skin for at least 60 seconds — allow the oil to do its work — before emulsifying with water. Watch as the day's grime literally melts away. This step alone transforms the effectiveness of everything that follows.

White bottle of Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel with a pump, set against a plain background. Black and gray text on the label.

Second Cleanse — Water-Based

Follow immediately with a water-based cleanser suited to your specific skin type. Special Cleansing Gel for normal to oily skin. Active Clay Cleanser for congested, breakout-prone skin — the activated charcoal draws out deep-seated impurities. Intensive Moisture Cleanser for dry or sensitive skin. The second cleanse ensures the skin is thoroughly, completely prepared for actives.

Double cleansing is where many clients initially resist — "two cleansers feels excessive" — and where every single one eventually becomes a convert. The difference in skin clarity, texture, and product performance after adopting the double cleanse is, quite simply, remarkable. We have seen it transform skin outcomes in our treatment room time and time again

Evening Exfoliation & Toning

With the skin now thoroughly cleansed, we move into the preparatory treatment phase of the evening routine. Exfoliation and toning serve the same fundamental purposes as in the morning — refinement, rebalancing, and preparation — but the evening context offers some additional flexibility and strategic advantages.

Evening Exfoliation

Exfoliation can be incorporated into the evening routine depending on individual tolerance and the actives you plan to apply afterwards. Some clients prefer to exfoliate exclusively in the evening; others alternate between morning and evening sessions. The key is personalisation.

  • Daily Microfoliant — Gentle enough for evening use on most skin types

  • Liquid Peelfoliant — A more intensive option for scheduled evenings

  • Rapid Reveal Peel — A professional-grade peel used as directed, typically once per week

Critical caution: Avoid combining strong chemical exfoliants with high-strength retinoids in the same evening unless professionally advised. This combination can overwhelm the barrier and trigger significant irritation. On retinoid nights, skip the exfoliant. On exfoliation nights, skip the retinoid. Our team can help you build a weekly schedule that maximises both.

Evening Toning

Hydrating toners may be reintroduced post-cleansing in the evening to rebalance the skin's pH after the double cleanse. The same toner options apply — Multi-Active Toner, Antioxidant Hydramist, or UltraCalming Mist — selected according to skin type and current condition.

In the evening context, toning takes on an additional significance: it acts as a hydration primer for the potent treatment actives that follow. A well-hydrated stratum corneum is more permeable to active ingredients than a dehydrated one. By applying a hydrating toner before your evening serum, you are essentially opening the door wider for those actives to reach the deeper layers of the epidermis where they can do their most meaningful work.

A single spritz or gentle press of toner-soaked cotton is all that is needed. The skin should feel refreshed and slightly damp — the perfect canvas for treatment.

Evening Targeted Treatments: Where Real Change Happens

The evening is the ideal window for reparative, corrective actives — the ingredients that genuinely reshape skin over time. With no UV exposure to contend with and the skin's repair mechanisms in full swing, nighttime treatment serums can work unimpeded, delivering transformative results that accumulate with consistent use.

This is the step where a professional consultation makes the single greatest difference. The correct evening active, at the correct concentration, introduced at the correct pace, can address concerns that no amount of general moisturising will touch. The wrong one, applied too aggressively, can set skin health back by weeks.

White bottle with a maroon cap, labeled "dermalogica dynamic skin retinol serum" against a plain white background. Text in grey.

Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum

The gold standard of evening actives. Retinol (vitamin A) accelerates cell renewal, stimulates collagen synthesis, refines pore appearance, and addresses fine lines with unmatched efficacy. Dermalogica's formulation combines retinol with a soothing buffer system to minimise the irritation that can accompany retinoid use.

Begin with two to three evenings per week and build gradually.

PowerBright Dark Spot Serum

A targeted brightening treatment that addresses hyperpigmentation, post-inflammatory erythema, and uneven skin tone. Niacinamide and hexylresorcinol work synergistically to inhibit excess melanin production and break up existing pigment clusters. Ideal for clients concerned with sun damage, melasma, or acne scarring.

Phyto Nature Oxygen Cream

A luxurious overnight treatment that combines phytoactives with barrier-restoring lipids. Designed to replenish the skin's natural defences and support cellular oxygenation during sleep. The cream-based format makes it particularly suitable for clients who need both active treatment and intensive moisture in a single product.

Remember: potent actives should always be introduced gradually. Enthusiasm is admirable; overenthusiasm with retinoids is a recipe for a compromised barrier. At No1 Urban Aesthetics, we build active introduction schedules for every client — starting low, monitoring response, and increasing frequency only when the skin demonstrates readiness.

Evening Eye Care & Night Recovery

The final steps of the evening routine mirror the morning in principle — dedicated eye treatment followed by a sealing moisturiser — but the product selection shifts to prioritise overnight repair and regeneration.

Eye Treatment

Repeat eye care as needed in the evening. If using a retinol-based eye product such as Age Reversal Eye Complex, the evening is the optimal time for application.

Retinol is photosensitive and works most effectively when the skin is not exposed to UV radiation.

Apply with the same gentle ring-finger technique, tapping along the orbital bone. Never bring strong actives too close to the lash line — the delicate mucous membranes of the eye do not appreciate enthusiastic product application.

Night Moisturiser / Recovery Cream

The evening moisturiser serves as both a barrier seal and a therapeutic treatment in its own right. Night creams are formulated to work in concert with the skin's natural repair cycle — delivering lipids, ceramides, and soothing actives during the hours when the skin is most receptive.

Routine by Age & Skin Stage

Woman's face aging progression in four panels labeled 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s+. Smooth transition, neutral expression, gray background.

Skin health is not static. It evolves with age, hormonal shifts, lifestyle changes, and environmental exposure. A routine that serves you brilliantly at twenty-five may be entirely inadequate by forty. At No1 Urban Aesthetics, we believe in routines that grow with you — adapting to your skin's changing needs at every life stage.

Your 20s — Prevention & Foundation

The twenties are about building habits that will pay dividends for decades. Focus on consistent SPF (this single habit will have the most significant long-term impact on skin ageing), adequate hydration, and a simple but effective cleansing routine. Antioxidant serums are a smart early investment. Retinoids are not yet essential but can be introduced at low concentrations towards the late twenties if desired.

Your 30s — Active Protection

Collagen production begins to slow noticeably. This is the decade to introduce antioxidants (vitamin C becomes a morning staple), begin gentle cell renewal with retinoids, and add targeted eye care. Peptide serums support collagen resilience. Exfoliation becomes more important as cell turnover decelerates. Build a robust, multi-step routine now and your forty-year-old self will thank you.

Your 40s — Hormonal Navigation

Perimenopause and menopause bring significant hormonal shifts that directly impact skin — reduced oestrogen leads to decreased collagen synthesis, increased dryness, and heightened sensitivity. Address pigmentation with targeted brightening treatments. Increase lipid replenishment. Adjust exfoliation frequency as the barrier may become more reactive. This is when professional guidance becomes most valuable.

Your 50s & Beyond — Restoration & Resilience

Prioritise lipid replenishment — the skin's natural lipid production has declined significantly. Firmness-supporting peptides and growth factors become key actives. Gentle renewal continues but exfoliation should be calibrated with care. Rich, nourishing moisturisers and barrier-strengthening treatments are essential. The goal is resilient, comfortable, luminous skin — not the pursuit of an arbitrary youthful ideal.

Common Mistakes We See in Clinic — And How to Avoid Them

After countless professional skin consultations at No1 Urban Aesthetics @GlitterbelsHQ in Newcastle-under-Lyme, we have identified a consistent set of mistakes that clients make — often unknowingly, often with the very best of intentions. These are not obscure edge cases; they are overwhelmingly common, and each one has a measurable negative impact on skin health.

Skincare mistakes image: over-exfoliating, skipping SPF, mixing actives, using harsh cleansers, following social media trends. Pastel colors.

More product is not better. Precision is better. A targeted, well-calibrated routine with five carefully selected products will always outperform a bathroom shelf crammed with fifteen poorly matched ones.

The Professional Difference: Why Expert Guidance Matters

Dermalogica's philosophy centres on one unshakable principle: skin health first. That means personalisation above everything else.

What works for one person may irritate another. What transforms one skin type may be entirely wrong for the next. Skin is as individual as a fingerprint — influenced by genetics, lifestyle, environment, hormonal profile, medical history, and a hundred other variables that no algorithm, no quiz, and no social media influencer can accurately assess through a screen.

This is precisely where professional consultation becomes not just valuable, but essential. At No1 Urban Aesthetics @GlitterbelsHQ in Newcastle-under-Lyme, every client journey begins with a comprehensive skin analysis. We assess barrier health, hydration levels, sensitivity, congestion, pigmentation, collagen quality, and skin type before recommending a single product. We then build a bespoke routine — products, concentrations, frequencies, and layering order — tailored to your unique skin profile.

Professional Skin Consultations

Our trained skin therapists use Dermalogica's Face Mapping technology alongside years of clinical experience to identify your skin's specific needs, strengths, and vulnerabilities. The result is a routine that is calibrated to your skin — not a generic recommendation pulled from a product quiz.

ProSkin Treatment Services

Our in-clinic ProSkin treatments are fully customised professional facials that combine advanced techniques with Dermalogica's professional-grade formulations. These treatments address concerns at a depth that home care alone cannot reach, and they amplify the results of your daily routine exponentially.

Advanced Clinical Treatments

When home care and professional facials need additional support, we offer advanced modalities including LED light therapy,

microneedling, and targeted chemical peels.

These treatments accelerate collagen remodelling, address stubborn pigmentation, and restore skin health at a cellular level.

Ongoing Skin Health Partnership

Skin is not a "fix and forget" proposition. As your skin evolves — with the seasons, with age, with lifestyle changes — your routine should adapt in step. We work with you as an ongoing partner in your skin health journey, adjusting products and treatments as your needs change.

Home Care + Professional Treatment: The Winning Combination

There is a common misconception that you can choose either professional treatments or a good home care routine. The truth is that neither is fully effective in isolation — they are designed to work synergistically, each amplifying the other's results.

Consistency, Not Chaos, Builds Resilient Skin

Let us be honest: in an industry saturated with new launches, viral trends, and the relentless pressure to consume more, the most revolutionary thing you can do for your skin is stay the course.

Consistency is the single most underrated ingredient in skincare. It is not glamorous. It does not make for exciting content. But it is, without question, the factor that separates clients who achieve transformative results from those who remain perpetually frustrated.

Your skin operates on cycles. The epidermal turnover cycle takes approximately 28 days — longer as we age. That means you need a minimum of four to six weeks of consistent use before any product can be fairly evaluated. Retinoids often require twelve weeks to show their full potential. Pigmentation treatments may take even longer. Switching products every fortnight because you have not seen instant results is one of the most counterproductive habits in skincare, and yet it is one of the most common.

28Days

Average epidermal cell turnover cycle

6-12Weeks

365Days

The Patience Principle

Skin health is a long game. The clients who achieve the most remarkable results at No1 Urban Aesthetics are invariably those who commit to their prescribed routine, attend their scheduled treatments, and resist the temptation to constantly overhaul their products based on the latest trending ingredient.

Trust the process. Trust the science. Trust the professional who has assessed your skin and built a plan specifically for you. The results will follow — not overnight, but with a reliability and permanence that no quick fix can match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need to use SPF every day in the UK?

Yes. UVA radiation penetrates cloud cover and glass and is present year-round — even in winter. Unlike UVB, which causes burning, UVA contributes to collagen breakdown and premature ageing. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is the most important step in protecting long-term skin health.

What is double cleansing and do I need to do it?

Double cleansing involves using an oil-based cleanser first to remove SPF, makeup and environmental debris, followed by a water-based cleanser to deeply cleanse the skin. In the evening, especially if you wear sunscreen or makeup, double cleansing is strongly recommended to properly prepare the skin for active treatments.

How often should I exfoliate?

Exfoliation frequency depends on your skin type, sensitivity and product choice. Some gentle enzyme exfoliants can be used daily, while stronger chemical exfoliants should be used two to three times per week. Over-exfoliation can compromise the skin barrier, so personalised guidance is important.

Can I use retinol every night?

Not immediately. Retinol should be introduced gradually to allow the skin to build tolerance. Many people begin with two to three nights per week and increase slowly. Consistency matters more than intensity, and barrier support is essential alongside retinoid use.

Do I need to use a toner in my routine?

Modern toners are not harsh or alcohol-based. They help rebalance the skin after cleansing and support better absorption of serums and moisturisers. While not mandatory for everyone, they can enhance hydration and overall routine performance.

What order should I apply my skincare products?

Always apply from lightest to richest texture. Cleanse first, then tone (if using), followed by serums, eye treatments, moisturiser and SPF in the morning. In the evening, double cleanse before applying treatment products and finishing with a night moisturiser.

Is more product better?

No. Using excessive amounts of product does not increase effectiveness and can sometimes cause irritation. Precision and consistency are more important than quantity. A well-structured routine tailored to your skin will outperform a crowded shelf of products.

Can I mix active ingredients like vitamin C, retinol and exfoliating acids?

Some combinations are beneficial, but others can increase irritation. For example, strong exfoliating acids and retinol should not always be layered together. A structured routine that alternates actives safely is more effective than applying everything at once.

Why is my skin not improving even though I use good products?

Routine order, frequency and barrier health all influence results. Even high-quality products can underperform if layered incorrectly, overused, or not suited to your skin condition. Professional assessment helps identify where adjustments are needed.
